Buttered Apples

buttered-apples

Warm and satiating, without any added sugars, these cooked apples with brown butter are delicious! Enjoy them as a quick, easy breakfast or afternoon snack, or serve them with whipped cream or ice cream for a decadent dessert. Inspired by the hot buttered apple recipe from Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild.

These hot buttered apple slices are very similar to the honeyed apple in Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, but for the difference that the honeyed apple is made from apples and courser bee honey, and the hot buttered apple is made from apples and goat butter. While the honeyed apple is very sweet, the hot buttered apple relies more on its spices and the natural sugars of the fruit.

Hot Buttered Apple

in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom & Breath of the Wild:

Apple + Goat Butter

The essential ingredient in this dish (besides the apples) is butter, so it’s important to use a quality butter for this if you can, or at least not margarine. In Breath of the Wild, goat’s butter is used, however that might be a bit hard to get a hold of depending on your location.

Butter costs an arm and a leg these days, but sometimes for a very special occasion it’s worth splurging on a really good stick of butter. If you’re serving this for a special holiday, then maybe it’s an opportunity for splurging on butter, but if it’s your everyday apple, regular butter will do just fine.

You can learn about hot buttered apples from a child named Koko in Kakariko Village. Also important to note that if you want to add extra hearts to this dish, make sure to use golden apples instead of regular apples.

This recipe for buttered apples can be prepared on the stovetop in under 15 minutes. In the future I might post a whole baked apple recipe, but for now, I wanted to post a simple apple dish that can be easily adapted and enjoyed without much fuss.

Hot buttered apples pair just as well with a dollop of yogurt as they do with whipped cream, if you’re looking for a bit more protein and less fat. If you are looking for an exquisite experience, try serving hot buttered apple slices with baked brie, walnut or pecan pieces, and a drizzle of fresh honey. It’s way too tasty.

Another way to serve these stovetop cooked apples would be on toast! You could even incorporate other fruits, such as pears into the recipe and cook them with the apples for some added flavour and texture.

Cooked Apples With Brown Butter

These delicious hot buttered apples are ready to eat as little as 20 minutes, making them a perfectly quick yet satisfying autumn dish. Serve with whipped cream (click here for recipe) for a more decadent experience. This recipe makes 2-3 servings.

Ingredients

  • 3 medium apples, sliced into wedges
  • 1-2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • dash of ground cloves
  • dash of ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of coarse sea salt
  • optional toppings: whipped cream or homemade ice cream

Tools

  • saucepan
  • cutting board
  • knife
  • cooking spoon
  • measuring spoons

Instructions

  1. Wash the apples, peel if desired, then cut them into wedges.
  2. Add the apples and a few spoonfuls water to a small pot over medium heat.
  3. Let the apple slices simmer for 5-10 minutes, until the apples are soft. Stir regularly.
  4. Add 1 1/2 tsp of the cinnamon along with the other spices, then stir to thoroughly coat the apple slices. Transfer the cooked apples to a serving dish.
  5. Place the butter into the same pot you used to cooke the apple. Melt the butter over medium heat for about 3 minutes, until the butter starts to brown and release an earthy nutty scent. Stir constantly as the butter browns.
  6. Mix the vanilla and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon into the browned butter.
  7. Drizzle the browned butter mixture over the cooked apples.
  8. Add some whipped cream if you like, sprinkle with a pinch more of cinnamon and sea salt, then serve.

*Note: Make the whipped cream ahead of time if you are planning to have whipped cream with this dish.

Cinnamon, Butter and Fall Apples

This recipe keeps in the fridge for a couple days, and they reheat well. They’re also quite amazing with homemade vanilla ice cream if you’re looking for something a little bit sweeter.

Also I just wanted to mention how much I love that the hot buttered apples recipe in Legend of Zelda is technically a family recipe. The book next to the cooking pot in the Kakariko Well is Koko and Cottla’s mom’s recipe book, in which she detailed the recipes her family enjoyed. It’s quite bittersweet since their mom has since passed away, and now along with their dad Dorian, they are only a family of three. But – it’s so cute that Koko is learning to cook her mom’s recipes.
