A simple creamy coleslaw made with red and green cabbage and freshly grated carrot, ready from start to finish in less than 30 minutes. A twist on the classic traditional coleslaw, this recipe features flavours of maple, Dijon, garlic, and a hint of tangy vinegar. Inspired the coleslaw dish from Stardew Valley, this coleslaw is perfect for picnics, barbecues, or as a side with fish and chips or tacos.
This coleslaw is creamy and savoury, with a hint of tanginess from the vinegar. A form of salad typically consisting of shredded cabbage mixed with a dressing, this coleslaw offers a little extra flavour in the dressing beyond your traditional coleslaw recipe.
The star for me here is of course, the garlic. Raw garlic is a breast in and of itself – fragrant, slightly spicy at times, and pretty healthy too. Use as much or as little raw garlic as you like in this recipe – a teaspoon is all that is listed, but just add more or less according to your preference. I like a lot, so I add somewhere closer to 2 tablespoons of raw garlic to my coleslaw. A single teaspoon of garlic is pretty hard to taste mixed into 4 cups of vegetables, but it does add a little something, especially if you let the coleslaw marinate in the fridge for a while before serving.

That is the one thing that makes coleslaw immeasurably more tasty – time. This coleslaw may only take 20-30 minutes to make (most of which is chopping cabbage and grating carrots) but try to let your coleslaw rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving. Kind of similar to marinating meat, or making a tiramisu, your coleslaw will taste its best on days 2 and 3 of it’s short life in your fridge.
Coleslaw in Stardew Valley: Red Cabbage + Mayonnaise + Vinegar
You can make coleslaw in Stardew Valley using either the farmhouse kitchen or cookout kit. Simply combine red cabbage, mayonnaise and vinegar. It’s a simple straightforward recipe, but very healthy! The game takes a point to note that, along with its light freshness.
Everybody likes coleslaw in Pelican Town (just about). I guess it’s like parfaits then? Well, almost everybody likes coleslaw except for Willy, Leo Krobus – and then there’s Gus. Poor Gus detests coleslaw! Sad guy. I am a bit surprised that Krobus dislikes coleslaw though, because I thought Krobus was really into mayonnaise… I guess it’s only the void stuff.
You can also use coleslaw along with some cloth to make a green shirt with a little yellow pattern across it. How cute – and fresh!

- To a separate bowl, add the mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, soy sauce, garlic, sesame oil, maple syrup, paprika, and celery seeds. Stir until the dressing is smooth and well-combined.
- Use a spatula or a large spoon to gently fold the dressing into the chopped vegetables until they are evenly coated.
- Sprinkle the freshly chopped parsley or cilantro over the coleslaw. Gently toss the coleslaw to distribute the herbs evenly.
- Taste the coleslaw and adjust the seasonings if needed. You can add more salt, pepper, or any other seasonings if desired.
- Serve right away, or cover and store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Letting the coleslaw chill in the fridge for 30 minutes before the first serving will yield a stronger flavour.

Simple Creamy Coleslaw With A Twist
I just love how simple this coleslaw is, and it pairs so well with some of my favourite dishes!
Try serving this creamy coleslaw with cheesy baked fish and chips, salt grilled fish, or just pair it with potato salad for the perfect barbecue or picnic side dishes.
Worried about the mayonnaise in this salad and want a healthier alternative? Look for mayonnaise made with olive oil or avocado oil instead – or just use Greek yogurt! It’s actually super, super delicious.
