A super simple, super easy tomato sauce, ready in thirty minutes. Inspired by the fruit and mushroom mix from Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, this is the special sauce you need on the night when you are cold, tired, and fighting seasonal depression.
Not to be confused with the new Hylian tomato recipes from Tears of the Kingdom. Those recipes will come later!
This sauce has everything you need – tomatoes, mushrooms… and LOTS of garlic!
This tomato mushroom sauce is warm, aromatic, and full of garlic -perfect for late night meal when you’re tired and cold after a hard day. This pairs well with pasta, of course, but lots of other meals too! Try it over roasted vegetables, chicken and rice, or even on toast with some cheese.
Fruit and Mushroom Mix in Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom: Mushroom + Fruit
This sauce is loosely inspired by the fruit and mushroom mix from Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, which in the game is created by cooking any mushroom with any fruit (without special properties). Of course if you use an ironshroom instead of a regular old Hylian shroom, you’re going to get Tough Fruit & Mushroom Mix (or whichever special type of fruit or mushroom you chose).
I like that about recipes like this from Breath of the Wild, that they are really simple yet highly adaptable depending on the type of affect you’re looking for. Making a chilly or electro meal has never been easier, assuming you have the right mushrooms.
I’d like to think this tomato mushroom sauce is also as adaptable – it’s going to taste a little different depending on the types of tomatoes and mushrooms you choose, as well as the herbs if you don’t always use the same ones. This sauce can really reflect your changing meal cravings if you want it to, or you can make it almost exactly the same every time!

Cooking this recipe also led me to wonder a few things about Link. Do you think he is depressed?
I mean, think about it… almost all his friends and acquaintances from before have passed or are really old now, Zelda is still demanding laborious tasks of him 100 years later, he lost his memory, his whole world looks pretty different now, and the monsters get reborn every blood moon.
It’s kind of a lot to deal with. He’s a seventeen-ish year-old boy who likes fighting, but the rest is a whole lot of obligation and distress, am I wrong?
I completely understand why he might rather play snow bowling and take down a Lizalfo fort than do anything for Zelda.
That’s the beauty of Breath of the Wild: it’s a great escape from all our problems (Link’s included) but we aren’t wasting our time either. It’s not just a “breath of the wild” but also a breath of fresh air and a break for our minds (while also improving our hand-eye coordination!).
So, here’s the sauce!

Tools
- saucepan or pot
- cooking spoon
- cutting board
- knife
- garlic mincer
- measuring cup
- measuring spoons
- optional: scissors for the herbs
- optional: cheese grater
- taste testing spoons
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the ingredients.
- Roughly chop the tomatoes (if using fresh)
- Slice the mushrooms
- Mince the garlic
- Dice the onion
- Chop the celery
- Chop the fresh herbs
- Grate the parmesan, if using cheese
Step 2: Slowly Heat the Olive Oil & Aromatics.
Add the olive oil to a pan (or pot) and slowly warm up the oil. While it’s warming up, add the garlic, onion, celery, and pepper to it can start to infuse the oil a little. This should take about 5 minutes to slowly bring it up to a simmer (about medium to med-high heat).
Step 3: Add the mushrooms.
Add in the mushrooms and let them sizzle. If you can (or have the energy), space them out a little so they aren’t too crowded in your pan. Let them sizzle away for about 5 minutes, flipping or stirring regularly.
Step 4: Add the Tomatoes, Salt & herbs.

Add the tomatoes, salt and herbs to the pan, and stir. Turn the heat down to med-low and let the sauce continue to simmer for about 20 minutes, or until you can scrape a spoon clear to the bottom of the pan (see example photo). Stir occasionally so the sauce doesn’t burn.
*If you’re pairing this sauce with pasta, now is the time to set a pot of water on the stove to bring to a boil. Toss your pasta in the hot water sometime in the last 10 or so minutes of your sauce cooking (depending on the amount of time your type of pasta needs to cook).

Step 5: Test & Serve the Sauce.
Give your sauce a taste test to see if it needs anything. You might need to add a little more salt.
Sometimes I might also add a pinch of sugar or a little more olive oil – this varies each time I make this due to the form and type of tomatoes and the mushrooms I used… also my mood that day.
Once you’re satisfied with your sauce, it’s ready to eat! Serve it with your pasta or dish of choice. Top with some freshly grated parmesan if you like – it mixes beautifully with this sauce.

A Cosy Warm Meal for Cold Dark Nights
In these dark early winter days, while the sun if finding more reasons to drop earlier each evening, I find tomatoes really remind me of summery brighter days.
Everything in this sauce is nourishing, and a great way to combat the winter blues. To me, it’s like a warm hug, especially if I’m not feeling 100 %. Pasta and tomato sauce is definitely a favourite comfort food for me.
Did you make this tomato mushroom sauce? Let me know!
